Our Purpose

We are passionate about breathing new life into obsolete and underutilized historic buildings and spaces.

We thrive on the challenge of taking old properties and making them vibrant again in ways that are both respectful and creative.

We Believe

Renovating and repurposing historic buildings creates a unique sense of place that cannot be replicated in any other way. Our work seeks to generate intrinsic value for new users and lasting benefits for the surrounding community.

Richmond, like many older cities, was founded and grew around rivers, crossroads, canals, and railroads. As a result, most historic properties are located at or near the urban core. Their prime locations and original grand designs give these buildings enduring site advantages and architectural character. When combined with thoughtful restoration, these qualities allow historic structures to be reborn as rediscovered landmarks.

Our Work

Our Properties

Since 2003, our commitment to excellence has been demonstrated through the work we have done around the Richmond area.

About Us

Macfarlane Partners, LLC was founded in 2002 by Charles Macfarlane, following his years as a Partner with Trammell Crow Company and Childress Klein Properties. Charles earned his A.B. in Economics from Duke University and his MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.

He began his career leasing industrial space in Charlotte, NC, before moving to Richmond to open the Central Virginia office for Trammell Crow Company. There, he gained extensive development experience by initiating and leading projects such as The Arboretum Office Park, North Run Business Center, Westerre Office Park, The Overlook, Pinebrook Industrial Park, Parham Forest, The Ridge, Villa Park I–IV, Southpark I–III, and numerous other commercial developments.

When Charles founded Macfarlane Partners, he shifted his focus from large-scale suburban office and industrial projects to the renovation and adaptive reuse of historic properties. His passion for the development process remained strong, but his work turned toward repurposing vacant and obsolete structures in the city’s core and surrounding neighborhoods.

Over the past two decades, Macfarlane Partners has played a role in helping to revitalize historic districts including Shockoe, Tobacco Row, Manchester, Monroe Ward, and the Fan. Charles has also been actively involved with organizations dedicated to preserving Richmond’s unique architectural heritage—ensuring that the city’s historic buildings and neighborhoods continue to tell their stories while serving the needs of future generations.
